United States
This is where we live, so the coverage is uneven on purpose. We have written a lot about the west coast and comparatively little about everywhere else, because that is where we actually spend our time.
The one thing worth saying to anyone visiting from abroad: the distances are not negotiable. Los Angeles to New York is roughly London to Baghdad. Pick a region rather than a country.
West coast
- California and its towns: San Francisco, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, San Jose, Ojai, Marin County, Petaluma, Sebastopol
- Oregon, where every beach in the state is public by law
- Washington, split down the middle by the Cascades
Elsewhere
- Alaska, bigger than most people picture
- Colorado, where the Rockies start
- Hawaii, eight islands, pick one
- Florida, two coasts with different personalities
- The Midwest, the part visitors skip
