North America
This is the continent we know best, which means we are harder on it. Below are the parts we keep going back to. Three countries, and the distances inside each of them catch people out more than anything else does.
Here is a summary of some of the most famous attractions in North America:
- Niagara Falls: One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Niagara Falls is a truly awe-inspiring sight to behold. Located on the border between the United States and Canada, the falls consist of three separate waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls. Visitors can take a variety of boat tours to get up close to the falls, or simply marvel at their grandeur from a distance.
- Grand Canyon: Another natural wonder, the Grand Canyon is a vast gorge carved by the Colorado River over millions of years. Located in Arizona, the canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide, and attains a depth of over a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters). Visitors can hike, bike,or take a mule ride along the rim of the canyon, or descend into its depths for a truly memorable experience.
- Yellowstone National Park: The world’s first national park, Yellowstone is a geothermal wonderland of geysers, hot springs, and mudpots. Located in Wyoming, the park also features striking waterfalls, alpine lakes, and abundant wildlife. Visitors can hike, camp, fish, and boat in the park, or simply take in the scenery.
- Statue of Liberty: A symbol of freedom and democracy, the Statue of Liberty is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States. Located in New York Harbor, the statue was a gift from France to the United States in 1886. Visitors can take a ferry to the island where the statue is located, and climb to the top for views of the city skyline and harbor.
- Golden Gate Bridge: One of the best known bridges in the world, the Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.The bridge is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, and offers wide views of the city and the bay.
- Banff National Park: Located in the Canadian Rockies, Banff National Park is one of the most popular national parks in Canada. The park is home to striking mountain scenery, alpine lakes, and abundant wildlife. Visitors can hike, bike, camp, fish, and ski in the park, or simply take in the untouched scenery.
- Chichen Itza: An ancient Mayan city located in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Chichen Itza is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world. The city is home to a number of well-preserved temples, pyramids, and other structures, including the Kukulkan pyramid. Explore the ruins on your own, or take a guided tour to learn more about the history and culture of the Maya.
