- Natural Beauty: Santa Cruz is renowned for its natural scenery. The city is framed by the Pacific Ocean, providing ample opportunities for beachcombing, surfing, and walking along the coast or along well-known streets like West Cliff drive. The nearby Santa Cruz Mountains are blanketed with ancient redwood forests, offering hiking, camping, and lots of outdoor exploration opportunities.

There’s a great trail hike accessible via campus called Pogonip. If you go off the beaten trail you can even find the Pogonip Koi pond. Keep an eye out for banana slugs here. There are a lot and you have to be careful not to step on one. Also there is a lot of poison oak so stay on trail as much as possible, wear long pants and learn to identify it in advance.
- Surfing Culture: Santa Cruz has a rich surfing heritage and is known as one of the best surf spots in California. Steamer Lane is a famous surf break, attracting surfers from around the world. Many surf competitions are also held here.
