San Francisco is one of the best known and diverse cities in the world. Perched atop a peninsula at the entrance to the San Francisco Bay, the city is known for its views, its food, and for reinventing itself every twenty years or so.
From its landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island to its diverse neighborhoods like Chinatown and Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco has something to offer everyone.

- Visit the Golden Gate Bridge: No trip to San Francisco is complete without a visit to the Golden Gate Bridge. This landmark is one of the most photographed bridges in the world and offers wide views of the city and the bay.
- Explore Alcatraz Island: Alcatraz Island is a former federal prison that is now a popular tourist destination.Visitors can take a ferry to the island and explore the cell blocks, dining hall, and other buildings.
- Visit Chinatown: San Francisco’s Chinatown is the oldest and largest Chinatown in North America. It is a neighborhood with colorful shops, delicious restaurants, and temples. One of our favorite places to eat is China Live. It gets busy so make a reservation!
- Take a walk through Haight-Ashbury: Haight-Ashbury is a neighborhood that was known for its hippie culture in the 1960s. Today, it is a trendy neighborhood with vintage clothing stores, independent bookstores, local cafes and record stores. There are some cool instagram-worth peace love murals, and it’s on the edge of Golden Gate Park so you could even tie it in with your visit to the park..
- Visit the Ferry Building Marketplace: The Ferry Building Marketplace is a historic building that has been transformed into a food hall and marketplace. Visitors can find fresh produce, prepared foods, and unique gifts from local vendors. If you visit on a weekend the outdoor area at the ferry building holds one of the best farmers markets in the city. You can also catch a ferry from here to Sausalito or Alameda island.
Noteworthy museums and attractions in San Francisco:
- de Young Museum (Golden Gate Park): One of the best collections of American art, as well as art from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Also has a tower you can go up for a view in every direction. Favorite part: the sculpture garden and James Turrell piece and the Ruth Asawa mobiles before you take the elevator up the tower.
- Japanese Tea Garden (adjacent to de Young Museum): Beautiful Japanese garden with a tea house, koi ponds, and stone lanterns.
- Legion of Honor (Lincoln Park): Collection of European art, including paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts.
- Palace of Fine Arts (Marina District): A Beaux-Arts building that is now a popular tourist destination.
- Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA): One of the largest and most comprehensive museums of modern and contemporary art in the United States.
- California Academy of Sciences: Natural history museum with exhibits on everything from dinosaurs to earthquakes to the human body.
- Exploratorium: Hands-on science museum with exhibits on topics such as physics, chemistry, and biology.
- Asian Art Museum: One of the best collections of Asian art, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and textiles from all over Asia.
