Coimbra, Portugal

An Introduction to Coimbra, Portugal, Where History and Academia Converge:

Coimbra sits on the Mondego River and has been a university town since 1290. That is not a detail. It shapes everything: the bars, the music, the students in black capes who look like they wandered off a film set and are in fact just going to class.

The Oldest University Town

At the heart of Coimbra lies the University of Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest universities in Europe. Its grandiose Joanine Library, with its gilded halls and ancient tomes, was actually used as inspiration for Disneys live action Beauty and the Beast. The gardens up the hillside to the university are worth the trip and worth the climb.

Medieval Alleys and Fado traces

Fado here is not the fado you hear in Lisbon. Coimbra fado was sung by male students, traditionally outside a window at night to a specific person, and it is lower and more restrained. Audiences clap by coughing. A few venues in the centre still perform it.

Views from the Royal Palace

Perched atop the city, the Royal Palace offers sweeping vistas over Coimbra’s terracotta rooftops. Its regal chambers and lush gardens stand as a sign of the city’s noble heritage.

The rest of it

Santa Cruz Monastery holds the tombs of Portugal’s first two kings, and there is a café attached to it that operates out of the old chapter house. The riverfront has been rebuilt for walking, and the footbridges across the Mondego give you the best view back at the city stacked up the hill.

Coimbra: A City of Eternal Learning

With its historic significance and intellectual legacy, Coimbra is a city that continues to inspire and educate. Students have been walking these same steps to lectures for over seven hundred years. It’s easy to access via train from Porto, Lisbon or Aveiro. While the city has some roughness around the edges from being weathered over so many years, it has an authentic appeal you won’t find anywhere else in Portugal.
