Aveiro, Portugal
Aveiro has canals, so people call it the Venice of Portugal. That undersells how odd it is.
The boats on the water are moliceiros, painted flat-bottomed things that once hauled seaweed off the lagoon to fertilise the fields. The paintings on their prows are usually rude jokes. Nobody explains this to you. You just drift past them.
The local sweet is ovos moles, egg yolk and sugar piped into thin wafer shells shaped like fish and shells. It is roughly as sweet as it sounds.
Ten minutes away at Costa Nova, the beach houses are painted in vertical stripes, the way a child would draw them. Most people do the two together in a day.
