Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA
Ottawa was made the capital partly because it was the compromise nobody objected to, and a faint air of that remains. Go in winter, when the Rideau Canal freezes into the longest skating rink in the world and people commute to work on skates. It is known for its Gothic revival Parliament Buildings, the Rideau Canal, and the National War Memorial among other major museums, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of History (technically located in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada), and the Canadian Museum of Nature.
Ottawa is well-connected to other major cities in Canada by train. VIA Rail Canada offers regular service to Toronto and Montreal, with both cities being just a few hours away by train. This makes Ottawa a great base for a stop in between exploring other places.
In addition to its many attractions, Ottawa is also a great place to enjoy the outdoors. The city is surrounded by parks and forests, and there are a number of hiking, biking, and skiing trails within easy reach. Ottawa is also home to the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is popular for skating in the winter, boating and tours in warmer weather, and walking or biking along the many trails that line it.
No matter what your interests are, you are sure to find something to love in Ottawa. It is a truly unique city.
