Montreal has several permanent farmers’ markets where locals and visitors can discover fresh, locally sourced produce and artisanal goods. Some notable ones include:
- Jean-Talon Market: Located in the Little Italy district, this is one of the largest and oldest markets in North America. Busier on the weekends though open all week-long with a year round partially enclosed indoor area.
- Atwater Market: Situated by the Lachine Canal, Atwater Market offers a wide variety of fresh produce, baked goods, and gourmet specialties. Smaller than Jean-Talon though has a more enclosed indoor corridor of sellers from fresh meat to cheese to veggies. There’s even a fabulous organic market and bakery inside.
- Maisonneuve Market: This market, also known as the Olympic Stadium Market, offers a diverse selection of fruits, vegetables, and prepared foods.
- Lachine Market: On the waterfront, this market is known for its fresh produce, including a range of fruits and vegetables.
- Bonsecours Market: Situated in Old Montreal, this historic market features a mix of boutiques, artisanal products, and gourmet food stalls.
These markets are not only excellent places to shop for fresh, local ingredients but also provide a wonderful opportunity to experience the local culture and culinary scene of Montreal.
My favorite was Jean-Talon Market, it’s a great spot to grab a bite of lunch and a very authentic experience. Since Jean-Talon is further from the city center we recommend taking the train instead of a car for faster transit. For dinner we recommend Atwater market since it is more happening in the summer month evenings. There are ample outdoor picnic tables and areas to eat, and many options for an affordable farm to table meal.
Whether you’re in the mood for tacos, crepes or a gluten free meal, I found it all at the Montreal farmers markets! If you only have time to visit one market and you are in Montreal during warmer months and have the time, I would recommend Jean-Talon. If you are visiting in colder months I would recommend Atwater since they have a more enclosed weather-friendly indoor area. And if you are short on time and staying in the city center then Atwater is also your best option for proximity.
