The Netherlands

About a third of the Netherlands is below sea level, held there by a system of dykes and pumps that the country has been maintaining for eight hundred years. Nobody seems worried. It is the most matter of fact piece of engineering in Europe.

Everyone visits Amsterdam. Fewer people take the twenty minute train to Haarlem or the hour to Utrecht, which are the same canals and gabled houses with a fraction of the crowds.
