FRANCE

Most people picture Paris when they picture France, and Paris is worth it. But the trips of ours that stuck were the ones where we left it: a village in Provence, a beach in Normandy, a market town where nobody spoke English and lunch took two hours. Each arrondissement has unique traits and character. Though Paris may be one of the most visited cities in Europe, there is much to see beyond its city limits.

Venture to the vineyards of Bordeaux or the lavender fields of Provence for more rustic beauty. The châteaux of the Loire Valley has historically preserved castles and chateau’s. For history buffs there are the D-Day beaches of Normandy. Feeling glamorous? Then the sunny Riviera is a great vacation area with its beautiful beaches, dreamy hotels and Mediterranean influence. And for outdoorsy folks, the French Alps make a memorable ski destination in the winter or summer hiking spot, known as one of the most impressive mountain chains in western Europe. Cities up north like Rouen and Strasbourg have a story-book appeal with stick houses and impressive Gothic architecture.

Then of course there’s French food. From croissants to cheese to coq au vin to buckwheat crepes, French food is savored worldwide though best served at its origins.

Van Gogh painted his best known work in Provence, and Edith Piaf grew up singing in the streets of Belleville. France wears its culture heavily and has earned the right to. And now modern musicians and artists are carrying on the strong cultural talent and presence of art as a part of French life.

There is something so special about France and what can be experienced within its borders. Whether you’re sipping espresso in a Parisian café or wandering the gardens of Versailles, France is a country to explore.
