Denmark

Denmark is small, flat, and cycled everywhere. The highest point in the country is 171 metres and they gave it a name anyway. Old castles, new architecture, and firm opinions about how both should be done.

Copenhagen, the capital city, offers old-world elegance and innovative design. Nyhavn is the row of painted houses along the old harbour that ends up on every postcard, and it still holds up in person. In the Latin Quarter the old buildings now hold shops and cafés. The Christiansborg Palace, a structure, houses the Danish Parliament and the Royal Reception Rooms, offering a glimpse into the nation’s political and regal legacy.

A short journey from Copenhagen lies Roskilde, where history breathes through the Viking Ship Museum. Here, ancient vessels, once mighty explorers of the seas, rest in a hauntingly beautiful hall. Visitors can even start a journey in the replica ships, experiencing a taste of Viking life.

Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, is a city that pays homage to the storyteller’s legacy. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum, set in a half-timbered house, offers insight into the life and works of this literary giant.

Aarhus is the second city and punches above its weight for art. The ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, with its circular rainbow walkway, invites visitors to explore contemporary Danish art. The Old Town Museum, a living history museum, transports visitors back in time to experience Denmark in days of yore.

Hygge: The Danish Art of Coziness.Central to Danish culture is the concept of ‘hygge,’ a feeling of coziness and contentment. In practice it means candles, blankets, and staying in. Danes take it seriously enough that the word does not really translate.

Castles, canals, and a long habit of designing everyday objects better than they need to be. Whether strolling through the historic streets of Copenhagen or sailing the waters of Viking lore, Denmark promises an experience that marries the past with the promise of the future.
