Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands, is renowned for its lush, volcanic landscapes, which include the iconic Mount Aso, one of the largest active volcanoes in the world. Kyushu’s natural hot springs, or onsens, have drawn travelers seeking relaxation for centuries. Plus, its proximity to South Korea means you could even take a ferry between Busan and Fukuoka. If there is one region that I would prioritize going back to on my next trip to Japan, then Kyushu is it!
The island has so much to see, with several well-preserved samurai and castle towns. Nagasaki, a city with a profound global impact, is known for its tragic history as well as its role in opening Japan to the world. On the other hand, Kumamoto Castle is one of the best preserved examples of feudal Japanese architecture.
Kyushu is also known for its distinct cuisine. Fukuoka, known for its street food culture, is the birthplace of the famous tonkotsu ramen. The island is also renowned for its premium produce, including sweet potatoes, tea, and citrus fruits including yuzu.
With its close proximity to South Korea, Kyushu travelers can take for a ferry ride from Busan, South Korea, to Fukuoka, providing an easy connection between two incredible places. Given its proximity to Korea, you may also encounter more South Korean tourists in Kyushu than other regions of Japan.
For those seeking a more tranquil experience, the quiet town of Yufuin in the Oita prefecture offers a serene escape surrounded by flower fields, mountains and home to an incredible modern art museum, Comico. Meanwhile, Imari, a town with a revered tradition in pottery, showcases the craftsmanship of the region.
Kyushu culture can also be found in the warmth and hospitality of its people. It’s a destination for travelers to explore lush mountainous landscapes, try incredible regional foods, and enjoy onsen culture in some of the smaller mountain towns. Plus if you are visiting Japan in the colder months, Kyushu stays more temperate than the rest of mainland Japan. What can I say? I love Kyushu and you will too!
